While there are numerous options available for carrying out cash-less transactions, sometimes we may have to visit ATMs for cash. But are these ATM transactions free?
How many transactions are free from own bank ATMs?
Customers are eligible for 5 free transactions (inclusive of financial and non-financial transactions) every month from their own bank ATMs.
For eg. a customer can carry out 5 free transactions in a month at the State Bank of India’s ATM for the bank account maintained with State Bank of India.
How many transactions are free from other bank ATMs?
Customers are eligible for free transactions (inclusive of financial and non-financial transactions) from other bank ATMs as follows –
- In metro centres – 3 transactions per month
- In non-metro centres – 5 transactions per month
For eg. a customer can carry out 3 free transactions in a month at the State Bank of India’s ATM in Mumbai for the bank account maintained with Bank of Maharashtra and 5 free transactions in a month at the Bank of Maharashtra’s ATM in Nagpur for the bank account maintained with Bank of Baroda.
What happens if number of transactions exceed the limits?
Beyond the free transactions, the banks can charge the customers maximum ₹21 (plus taxes) per transaction.
When were the customer charges revised?
The customer charges were revised by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) based on the recommendations of the Committee [Chairman: V G Kannan, the then-CEO of the Indian Banks Association (IBA)], set up to review the entire gamut of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) charges and fees with particular focus on interchange structure for ATM transactions.
The banks were allowed to increase the customer charges from ₹20 to ₹21 per transaction with effect from January 01, 2022.
